History
The Saint Petka Church in Lakeshore is the newest parish in the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada. It belongs to the Eastern Canadian Deanery. It was founded on February 8, 2014, at the request of the faithful in this city. The faithful then immediately began working diligently to find a place suitable for their place of worship and a school for their children. In mid-February 2014, the process of purchasing a property with a school from the local Greater Essex County School Board began, and shortly thereafter the school board approved the sale of the property to this parish. The property is 8.3 acres in size and is located in Lakeshore, Essex County, Ontario. It belongs to the urban area of Windsor, although Lakeshore itself is about fifteen kilometres from Windsor. The school building and property are of an appropriate size to meet the needs of this parish for both a place of worship and a Serbian school and various sports and entertainment activities. The school on the property is the former Maidstone Central Public School, built from 1962 to 1964 and designed in the postmodern style by architect John Peter Thomson. It is unique for its orientation to landscape, horizontal clean lines, flat facade as well as the main entrance doors which are surrounded in glass and decorative ceramic tiles. After purchasing the property, the faithful soon began to organize themselves and began converting the interior of the school into a place of worship. Two classrooms, a library, a large and small kitchen, as well as a large and small hall were created. His Grace Bishop of Canada Dr. Mitrofan consecrated a new iconostasis in 2019, and in 2021 he consecrated a new bell tower. A new gate at the entrance was installed in 2024. This parish celebrated its first great jubilee, ten years of existence, in 2024.
The parish has about 60 families. In addition to Sunday and holiday services, the parish organizes a church school every Sunday where religious education, Serbian language and folklore classes are taught. The parish also has its own Circle of Serbian Sisters called Carica Milica (Empress Milica).
