Serbian Days in Winnipeg Marked by Historic Visit of Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia

Article by Fr. Georgije Tubonjic

On June 6 and 7, 2026, the Serbian community in Winnipeg had the special honour and blessing of hosting His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Canada, Mr. Stefan Tomasevic. This visit is of historical significance, as this is the first official visit by any Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Serbian community in Winnipeg.

Upon his arrival on Friday, Ambassador Tomasevic visited the Saint Sava Church in Winnipeg on Saturday morning, where he had the opportunity to learn about the life of our parish and the numerous works that have recently been successfully completed. On that occasion, he expressed great satisfaction with what he saw, praising the work of the church administration and the faithful people who, with love and sacrifice, preserve and improve their St. Sava shrine.

The traditional event “Serbian Days” was held on June 6 and 7 in the premises of the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Demetrios. The large number of visitors, the rich cultural and spiritual program, as well as the fraternal atmosphere that prevailed during both days, testified to the strength and unity of our community. According to many participants, this was the largest gathering of Serbs in Winnipeg in the last twenty years.

Of particular significance was the joint Holy Liturgy held on Sunday, June 7, with the fraternal Greek Orthodox community and priest Nikolaos Tambakis. This prayer gathering was a wonderful confirmation of the unity of Orthodox Christians and the brotherly love that unites us in Christ.

In his address, Ambassador Tomasevic praised the work of the Serbian community in Winnipeg, emphasizing that the preservation of faith, tradition, and national identity is of great importance for our people in the diaspora. He particularly emphasized the importance of mutual harmony and unity, encouraging all present to continue to work harmoniously and unitedly for the benefit of future generations.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all donors, sponsors, benefactors and volunteers who, with their effort, time and contributions, enabled the successful organization of this year's Serbian Days. We especially thank the members of our folklore group, who have lovingly preserved Serbian culture and tradition for years and who, as always, were up to the task.

We also owe gratitude to our hosts from the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Demetrios for their brotherly love, hospitality, and cooperation, which has been an example of true Christian unity for years.

May the Lord bless all who contributed to this joyful and historic event, and grant our community the strength to continue to grow in faith, unity, and love for God, the Church, and its people.
